Gary and the youth participating in SubArtSpace are continuing to build towards the “big performance”, as we’ve taken to calling it. We shared personal stories last week, which became (without any effort) a swapping of drunken escapades. Many of the stories were really funny and we could have easily spent the whole day doing that but we needed to start exploring stories about people we had not met, and things we had not experienced. This was difficult, and we struggled to accurately identify the emotions we might bring to each situation. Some of the youth who were comfortable with the other activities we had been doing struggled with this activity, while the ones that had a harder time with the loud scenes thrived. It’s interesting how our personalities and experiences impact our abilities to empathize and act out certain scenarios.
This week I’ve also been meeting with other interested youth to see how we might incorporate a wider variety of work. I met one young man whose emotional strength, personal insight and growth over the past few months were remarkable. I hope more people will be able to hear his story and journey
Yes, at this point SubArtSpace is still a bit of an abstract concept, but we are on our way to composing a very dynamic piece!
